The Charter of the Society

Chapter 1 Principal Rules

Article 1. The society shall be named "International Society of Life Information Science (ISLIS) ".

Article 2. The head office shall be located in Japan.

Chapter 2 Aims and Activities

Article 3. The ISLIS shall aim to advance research in the fields of life information, promote international exchange and networking, and contribute to the progress of science and to human peace and welfare.

Article 4. The Society shall achieve the aims mentioned above by:

1. Sponsoring academic meetings, such as symposia.
2. Promoting and conduct research.
3. Publishing official academic journals.
4. Facilitating international exchange of members from all countries.
5. Promoting educational programs to inform the public of the Society's findings.
6. Furthering its aims by considering results and suggestions of a majority of the members.

Chapter 3 Membership and Fees

Article 5. The Society shall be comprised of members who agree with the aims of the Society and meet standards established by the Society.

1. Professional Member: A person who has professional achievements and a research background.
2. Regular Member: A person who is research- oriented.
3. Student Member: A student who is deemed suitable for membership.
4. Practical member: A person who has acquired skills through practical experience and training, and is deemed suitable for membership.
5. Supporting Member: An individual or a group who agrees and supports the aims of the Society and is suitable for membership.
6. Honorary and other memberships.

Article 6. Members (excepting honorary members) must pay the membership fees shown in the Regulations and Rules.

Article 7. Members who disgrace the Society or do not pay their fees can be removed by a decision of the Regular Board of Directors.

Chapter 4 Officers, Advisors and Trustees

Article 8. The President chooses the following officers among the members of the Society and commissions them with agreement of the Regular Board of Directors. Their terms are for one year. The President cannot be selected for more than two consecutive terms.

President (1): Shall represent and rule the Society.
Vice President (several): Shall help and represent the President.
Chairman of the Board of Directors (1): Shall control the management.
Managing Director (several): Shall manage and direct routine Society projects.
Director (several): Shall manage and direct Society projects.
Auditor (2): Shall audit financial affairs.
Other: Necessary officers

Article 9. The President can commission Advisors and Trustees with agreement of the Regular Board of Directors and their terms are for one year.

Trustees are chosen from the members of the Society.
Advisor (several): Shall advise about the enterprise of the Society.
Trustee (several): Shall consider about the enterprise of the Society.

Article 10. The Chairman of the Board of Directors can commission several Managers with agreement of the Regular Board of Directors and their terms are for one year.

Chapter 5 Organization

Article 11. The society has the following decision-making committees.

General Meeting: Shall be the supreme decision-making committee, and be comprised of the Professional members and the Regular members of the Society.
Board of Directors: Shall manage and execute Society projects, and be comprised of the members of the Regular Board of Directors and Director(s).
Regular Board of Directors: Shall manage and execute daily Society projects, and be comprised of officers without Auditors commissioned by the President with agreement of the Board of Directors.

Article 12. The President shall convene the General Meeting if necessary.

Article 13. The Chairman of the Board of Directors shall convene the Board of Directors and the Regular Board of Directors if necessary.

Article 14 The following matters shall be subject to the approval of the immediate meeting of the Board of Directors and the General Meeting.

1. The enterprise plan and the budget of income and expenses.
2. The enterprise report and the financial results.
3. Trust and dismissal of officers.

Article 15. The Society shall be able to organize research institutes, overseas organizations, local organizations, various kinds of committees etc.

Chapter 6 Enterprise and Account

Article 16. The enterprise and fiscal year shall start on April 1 and end on the following March 31.

Chapter 7 Change of the Charter of the Society and the Society Dissolution

Article 17. A vote of more than two-thirds of the General Meeting shall be necessary to change the Charter.

Article 18. A vote of more than two-thirds of the General Meeting shall be necessary to dissolve the Society.

Chapter 8 Supplementary Rule

Article 19. The Board of Directors shall decide rules for enforcement of the Charter, and the Regular Board of Directors shall decide other rules.

The Charter shall be effective as of August 30, 2003.

Fees

1. The annual / initial Fees are as follows and shall be pre-paid by all members (excepting honorary members).

1.1 Fees for the members in Japan

1.2 The fee for members outside Japan is determined by their countries' financial situation.

2. Members who do not pay the fee for more than one year shall be removed.

3. The fee that was paid once is not returned in principle.

Standards for Admission

The following standards apply for admission to the society.
  1. Professional Member is a person who agrees with the aims of the Society and has professional achievements and is research-oriented. The person must have principally written more than three academic papers concerning the Society's fields and have the recommendation of two members of the Board of Directors of the Society or one Board of Directors member and one Professional Member.
  2. Regular Member is a person who agrees with the aims of the Society and is research-oriented. The recommendation of two members of the Board of Directors of the Society or one Board of Directors member and one Professional Member is necessary.
  3. Student Member is a student who agrees with the aims of the Society and is suitable for membership.
  4. Practical Member is a person who agrees with the aims of the Society, has acquired skills through practical experience and training, and is suitable for membership. The recommendation of two members of the Board of Directors of the Society or one Board of Directors member and one Professional Member is necessary.
  5. Supporting Member is an individual or a group who agrees with the aims of the Society, supports the Society and whose background is suitable for the Society.
  6. Membership shall not be utilized for profit motives.
