In the framework of the V Congress of Ethnologists and Anthropologists of Russia (Omsk, June, 7-12, 2003)
the panel

“Shamanism and Other Traditional Beliefs and Practices on the Boundary of Millennia:
Trends, Problems, Research Methods”

 is to be held (the panel is lead by V. I. Kharitonova, Ph. D., Moscow, IEA, RAS).

I invite You to take part in the panel work and engage Your colleagues interested in the present topic in the organization of the meeting to be held in the form of a round-table discussion. This type of forum providing an opportunity to discuss different problems will allow us to consider a wide range of issues in detail in the framework of the panel. It is a well known fact that the processes which followed the beginning of perestroika have considerably changed traditional religious beliefs and practices situation, including shamanism in our country and even in the world. I suppose that at present it is possible to draw some conclusions and depict a rather detailed and vivid picture of the events, to model the future patterns of the processes.
The  results of panel work - in the case of interesting materials and scientifically adequate reports (articles) - are to be published in the latest volume of the international scientific series “Ethnological Studies of Shamanism and Other Traditional Beliefs and Practices”.
I suggest to focus on the following issues:
-    traditional beliefs and practices (TBP) before perestroika and at present: problems of evolution and transformation of traditions, revival and modernization of TPB, development of their new forms on the basis of traditional ones;
-    TBP and traditional confessions, neoreligious movements;
-    TBP and “folk healing”, magic-mystic “sciences” and practices;
-    TBP and “shamanic-magical modernism” in the country and in the modern world;
-    shamanism and neopaganism: parallels, similarities and differences;
-    problems of research on sacral practices, esoteric knowledge, including field work experience of “insiders” and “outsiders” in a cultural context with traditional elements involved;
-    modern research methods of shamanism and other TPB.
Considering the complexity of the problems in focus an interdisciplinary approach in the panel work is to be applied. Not only anthropologists (ethnographers, ethnologists), but also specialists of other scientific areas, including engineering sciences, and everyone interested in the phenomenon of shamanism and other TPB are invited.
The working language of sessions is Russian; discussions can also be held in English and German (if it is necessary, please, provide a preliminary information).
Please, keep to the deadline of February, 15 and send abstracts of Your presentation via e-mail (see the attached information of the Association Ethnologists and Anthropologists of Russia), one more copy should preferably be sent to my e-mail address: d_funk@iea.ras.ru  The abstracts received will serve as a basis for planning panel work, applicants sending the most interesting and scientifically significant texts will be offered an opportunity for publication of their articles with all the conditions described.

Sincerely Yours,
Valentina Kharitonova
