He was born in July 1944, and grew up in Tokyo, Japan. He researched the theory of quantum mechanics and the experimental atomic physics. He received the Ph. D. degrees at the University of Electro-Communication and at Tohoku University.
In 1971, he entered National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), Science and Technology Agency (STA), Japan. He researched and developed imaging detectors for radiation incidence and radioactivity distribution. In an application to medical science, he developed the first positron emission tomograph (PET) in Japan with an original method in 1979, then he was awarded the Prize of Notable Invention by the Director General of STA. Starting in 1980, he studied two years at Washington University, St. Louis, U.S.A., where he succeeded in developing the first PET using time-of-flight information with Dr.M.M.Ter-Pogossian. After he returned to Japan, he researched automatic classification of radiation-induced chromosome aberration, and automatic extraction algorithm of lung cancer from X-ray CT images. Then, he was awarded the Prize of Notable Research Achievement on imaging of living body information by the Director General of STA.
In 1993, he started to survey and research Qigong and parapsychological phenomena that he had wondered about for a long time. In 1994, he began to research brain potential waves associated with extra-sensory perception. In 1995, he was awarded a budget from STA (one hundred million yen/ 5 years) for "Study on Analyzing Methods of Human Body Functions Using Various Simultaneous Measurements," and he has started the project. He has applied for the big- budget (one billion yen / 5 years) for "Clarification of Emission from Living Bodies" involving participation of the main members of ISLIS.
His hobby is wind surfing, skiing, playing tennis, camping, climbing mountains, serious discussion with a little alcohol about science, mysterious phenomena, and philosophy.
